Percival Dyer died in Belgium aged 19 years. Born in Milton Abbas to James and Annie Dyer by 1911 the family was living in Garland Rd. He was a 15 year old apprentice plumber. His brother Frederick also fell. On Christmas Day 1914,
The Western Gazette published part of a letter he had written to his mother:
Thank-you for the parcel you so kindly sent me. It contained everything I need: the scarf is a beauty [...] I will save the pudding as we shall be in the trenches on Christmas-day, and I will try to boil it. It will be good, I guess. I had one narrow squeak. I was sniping for the trenches when a shot went across my hat from back to front -- a little bit lower and I should have been "out". We are on the Franco-Belgian frontier, and it"s jolly cold out here. It"s always raining.
By the time the letter was published, Percival had been dead for seven days.
