Story
Harold Wilfred Eaves appeared before the Dorset County Appeal Tribunal in October 1916. His case was described as follows: "Mr. Dodhson (Bournemouth) appeared on behalf of Harold Wilfred Eaves, a youthful painter of "Devonia", Leyton Road, Upper Parkstone. Eaves had claimed exemption at the Poole Borough Tribunal on the grounds of conscientious objection to military service. It transpired that he had served in the Territorials prior to the war, and the local tribunal, declining to believe that he was a conscientious objector, exempted him from combatant service only. He had since been twice before the Appeal tribunal. On the first occasion the decision of the Poole Borough Tribunal was upheld and the appeal dismissed. Application was then made for leave for a re-hearing in order that evidence might be brought to prove that domestic hardship would result from the calling to the colours of appellant. Consent was given, Mr. Dodhson now appeared to support the case on those grounds. The tribunal again refused to believe that appellant was a genuine conscientous objector, and also agreed that the case of domestic hardship was not proved, and the appeal was dismissed."
