Story
In 1881 Ralph"s parents were running the Red Lion Inn in Strand Street. Twenty years later his father is listed as a Coal Merchant, with Ralph as his assistant in the coal business. By 1911 Ralph himself was a coal merchant and had married Lilian Alice Eyers. They had two children, and also employed a fourteen year old domestic servant: Bessie Kearley. In 1917 Ralph applied for exemption from military service on the grounds of being a conscientious objector. He had already applied for this via his local tribunal, but they had placed him the non-combatant corps
